Market Trends to Watch

IPO trends for tech companies affect the upstream funding ecosystem.

Fortune:  Companies Find a New Allure in Going Private

“It’s a tectonic shift: In three of the past six years, more tech companies (by total value) have fled the public markets … than have gone public, according to M&A advisory firm Bulger Partners. Think about that. Till recently, the only thing more certain than a Ping-Pong table in a Silicon Valley office was the dream of cashing out in an IPO. Now? The shaky markets and pressures of being public have changed the equation.”

The New Media World

While news feeds are one of the original technology functions, we have become better at curating feeds and have also become more dependent on them to bring order to internet chaos. However, increased sophistication and automation leads to questions about whether the news is now biased. In addition, as the largest social media disseminator of news, Facebook drives changes in how we consume news.

Quartz:  The U.S. Media has More Reason than Ever to be Worried About Facebook

“A majority of U.S. adults—62%—say they now get news from social media, and 18% of them do so often, Pew Research Center recently found, based on a 4,600-person survey conducted with Knight Foundation in 2016.”

“And, most commonly, those who get news from social media get it from Facebook. Forty-four percent of US adults surveyed said they use Facebook for news. The next most-used outlet—YouTube—was used by just 10% of people for news.”

Digiday:  85 Percent of Facebook Video is Watched Without Sound

“‘From day one, there pretty much has been the psychology that you have to catch their attention immediately,’ said Gretchen Tibbits, chief operating officer for LittleThings. Facebook counts a view at three seconds, which means publishers have to find ways to convince users to stick around in order to capture that view. ‘But while the first three seconds are critical, the video also has to be designed to capture attention without needing sound,’ said Tibbits.”

“Tailoring content to the whims of the Facebook news feed has helped publishers scale on the platform. It’s also turned news feeds stale as publishers put up countless videos that have the same look and feel.”

Live Events are Content Generators

Curiously, in a world that is ever more digitally connected, we still can’t get away from in-person events. You gotta show up.

CMS Wire:  Why It’s So Important to Attend B2B Industry Events

“CMI’s (Content Marketing Institute) own 2016 benchmarks found 75 percent of marketers believe in-person events are more effective than options including blogs or white papers. For the sixth consecutive year, the organization rated events as the most effective marketing tactic.”

“Think of events as goldmines for vendors: they give company representatives the opportunity to have knowledge-based dialogue with attendees. If vendor follow-up continues to be knowledgeable, 86 percent of ITDMs (IT decision-makers) agree that it can positively impact the likelihood of a purchase, the research shows.”
